Why it’s so hard to give up sugar & flour

In order to balance hormones associated with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, sugar, flour, and processed foods have gotta go.

It’s just not possible to feel your best, have energy throughout the day, and reduce excess weight if you are having high insulin spikes…which is what these foods do. And if you have PCOS, your body is even more prone to these effects.

It’s such a bummer, right? It feels like punishment from the universe. Why is it that the people who crave these foods the most are affected so negatively by them?

Here’s why…

The high we get from processed foods like sugar and flour cause a massive dopamine hit in our brains. This is not our fault, they were manufactured to do this in order to sell. The hit we get from them is so much higher than the natural pleasures in life, that we keep wanting more in order to feel good.

This can be considered a false pleasure, meaning it robs us of being able to enjoy the simple things, like a walk with your family or laying down with a nice book.

Think about it, processed foods were made by humans. Humans created them to sell and make money, so they’ve been developed to be addicting!

The only way out is through….

So the only way to stop craving these foods is to get off of them. The initial detox phase is probably not going to feel pleasant. You may experience physical symptoms like headaches, extreme cravings, and fatigue.

And then there’s the slew of mental symptoms- ranging from anger, irritability, frustration…you name it. The reason these can come up so strongly is because before the processed foods helped to mask them, so we never really had to feel our feelings.

Going off of sugar and flour is such a beautiful opportunity to work with all of these, and to be gentle with yourself, and committed to the process.

The process can take anywhere from a week to two months, depending on your body and how reliant you’ve been on these foods.

Once you’re off you’ll notice that you no longer crave them. Your body will be SOO happy, and you will feel more energized, with much fewer mood swings. You also won’t need to eat as often because your blood sugar will be stable. You may begin to lose excess weight. And best of all, you’ll notice your PCOS symptoms beginning to improve.

It’s so worth it!
