Alright, so we’re three-quarters of the way into January and despite your big 2018 goals, you might be finding yourself in the same place as you were back in December. DAMN IT!
I have totally been there, and I want to help. That’s why this week I’m sharing the top reasons most people give up on our new year’s resolutions and how to get back on track with your goals! In my last blog post, I went into detail about reason #1, which is that you aren’t taking baby steps. Feel free to go back and read that one if you haven’t.
Now, reason #2…
LACK OF PLANNING AND SCHEDULING
Guys, this is HUGE! Forming new habits is not usually easy or natural, so writing out your plan in your calendar will make it so much more likely for you to follow through with it. It’s a practice of making decisions ahead of time so that you don’t have to “hope for the best”, and rely on willpower.
Think about it… when you schedule an important work meeting, you for sure put that on your calendar and don’t schedule anything else at that time. That’s because you are committed to showing up. So why not do that for yourself?
Here is the method I use to plan my week. I do this every Sunday morning when everyone else is still asleep. I get a cup of coffee, get out my notebook and my planner and I get to business..
- Write down your goal(s)
- Write down the action steps that will help you to achieve your goal.
- Decide on 3-5 steps you are committed to taking this week.
- Schedule them into your week, around your workdays and prior commitments.
- Assess and make sure the schedule looks like something you can be 100% committed to following through with. If not, change it up until it feels totally doable—and commit to it!
- The following Sunday, evaluate how you did. What did you accomplish? What could be improved? Then go back to step 1!
So whether your goal for 2018 is to make more money, lose those extra pounds, or clean out your storage closet, a plan of action is going to support you in achieving it. So why not give it a try!
