Staying on plan during vacation

I’m heading off to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico today for one of my best friend’s wedding and I couldn’t be more excited!

This is a super special trip because, well first of all, what’s better than watching two of your favorite people get married? But what’s also super fun is that they are getting married at the same spot Josh and I did three years ago. So it’s going to be a celebration all around.

I don’t have any sense of worry or nervousness about food, about staying healthy and on protocol, or about how I’m going to manage my weight loss over these next few days where I’ll be surrounded by all the food and drinks you can imagine.

But this wasn’t always the case!

I used to get so worried about vacation. I’d worry that I was gonna go off the rails and come back 10 pounds heavier. I worried that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy myself without being able to eat and drink all of the things. I’d get nervous that the places I’d be staying wouldn’t have any healthy options for me.

And on top of that, my husband is a total foodie and he bases our entire trip around the restaurants and meals he wants to experience while we’re there.

So as you can imagine, I’ve done some work to get to the place I’m in now, where it’s no big deal.

Here’s the number one thing that helps me stay healthy on vacation, while also enjoying myself…

I PLAN!

I think ahead and create a vacation protocol for myself

I decide things like…..

 

  • How do I want to feel when I get back from the trip?
  • Do I want to lose weight this week or indulge a little more than normal?
  • How many mindful indulgences (joy eats) am I going to plan?
  • What are my joy eats going to be?
  • Do I want to continue with daily movement/exercise or take a break from it?
  • And I still plan all of my food 24 hours in advance.

 

I actually write down all of my answers to these questions in my food journal and create a plan! 

The next time you take a vacation, I encourage you to make decisions ahead of time. Don’t let your primitive brain run the trip or you’ll come back feeling worse than when you left!

It is totally possible to both stay healthy and enjoy all of the pleasures of vacation without overeating.
